Coverage of Special Olympics - Where Were the Major Television Networks?

!±8± Coverage of Special Olympics - Where Were the Major Television Networks?

I guess the major network television media didn't think that the Special Olympics were special nor really Olympics.

Katie Couric didn't have a little blip about one of the contestants even though her sympathetic style would dictate that she do so. There are always plenty of stories at the Special Olympics.

The Vice President of the United States was ignored as if he wasn't here in Idaho cheering on these special people. The contestants were thrilled by his visit. The national television media was not.

The local television channels asked, "Where is the national coverage?

People in China complained that they had competing athletes but there was no coverage. Well, that was true of Idaho. We had no coverage here to speak of. Well, some.

Even PBS had little or no interest.

U.S. Vice President Announces Appointment of Special Assistant for Disabilities Policy

Vice President Biden said that President Obama was concerned about the Olympics. During his visit to the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, on 12 February, he announced that Kareem Dale has been named the special assistant to the president for disabilities policy. Dale's appointment marked the first time a U.S. president has had a special assistant focused exclusively on disability policy.

Biden said, "The commitment that the President and I have to Special Olympics and people with disabilities is deep and abiding. And we are backing up those words with real action at the White House," said Biden. "This is our first step to ensure that we have a strong advocate for people with disabilities at the highest levels of our administration." The nation needs policy changes that will ensure Americans with disabilities can get and keep fulfilling jobs without worrying about losing government-funded health insurance or other assistance, he added. "This is a civil rights movement," Biden said. "There's a need to have changes in policy."

But this was not important to the national media. Why should they mention such trivia? Kareem Dale is partially blind but not as blind as the national media.

Biden watched ice skating. Five pairs competed: Jose Visiconty and Brenda Monreal, Special Olympics Mexico; Tobias Werner and Cristin Ziebe, Special Olympics Germany; and three pairs from Special Olympics Chinese Taipei - I Han Pan and I Ju Wang; Keng Shan Chang and Sung Chien Sung; and Kuei Ying Lin and Fang Ting Hung.

Biden awarded medals to the pairs, and Kwan gave them bouquets. Read the story at the Special Olympic web site.

So, over 2000 athletes come from all the world to Idaho to compete in the Special Olympics and the national media could not find one damned story?

Well, there were over 2000 stories.

Canine Distemper

!±8± Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is a contagious, incurable, often fatal, multi-systemic viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. It is caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV - a paramyxovirus similar to that which causes human measles.) The canine distemper virus is transmitted through the air, when infected animals cough, as well through bodily fluids such as urine. Puppies/dogs diagnosed with or suspected of having canine distemper should be quarantined immediately. While dogs of any age can be affected by CDV, most are puppies, between 3-6 months old. The key to preventing CDV is early vaccination, so talk to your veterinarian when you take your puppy for his/her first check-up.

The distemper virus can affect many systems of the body and common signs include:

o nasal and eye discharge;
o coughing;
o diarrhea/vomiting;
o fever that may come and go;
o seizures

Often, mildly-affected dogs may only cough, thus being misdiagnosed as having "kennel cough." Others may develop pneumonia. Puppies that recover experience severe tooth enamel damage. Also, the nose and foot pads of a young dog may become thickened (also known as "hardpad disease.")

CDV is deadly serious, and can spread rapidly through a kennel, especially if unvaccinated animals are present. Although not all infected dogs die, a significant number may. While dogs of any age are susceptible, the very young and old have the highest death rate. Dogs that recover from distemper may suffer permanent damage to vision as well as the nervous system.

As your veterinarian can explain to you, there are several methods he/she can use to diagnose distemper in dogs/puppies, including:

1. Polymerase chain reaction test (lab test) can be performed on samples of urine, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, blood, and post-mortem tissues;

2. Skin biopsies (including dog's pads), can be examined for the presence of the canine distemper virus;

3. Depending upon the severity and time of infection, blood examined microscopically may show characteristic changes called "canine distemper inclusion bodies";

With some diagnostic tests (i.e. antibody tests), it is difficult to distinguish between infection and the changes normally seen with the canine distemper vaccination. While there is currently no specific treatment for canine distemper, intravenous fluids are administered to prevent dehydration, and anti-seizure medications can be used if neurologic signs develop.

The good news is that excellent vaccines, with minimal side effects, have been developed and used for years, making significant strides in reducing the frequency of CDV. These vaccinations should be boostered for the life of the dog.

Whirlpool Duet Washer F2 Error Code

!±8± Whirlpool Duet Washer F2 Error Code

When the Whirlpool Duet washer control board detects a "long drain" condition the control panel will display the F2 Error Code.

During many parts of the wash cycle the pump will turn on and attempt to drain the water from the inside of the tub. If the pump time exceeds 8 minutes the water valves will turn off and a F2 error code will flash. In many instances the error code will surface but then "go away" only to surface 1 day, week, or month later. Other times the error code will surface and will not go away until professional repair is needed.

There are a few different things that cause the long drain or inability to pump efficiently. The most frequent problem I see is junk, bobby pins, toothpicks, socks, underwear, bra under-wires, plastic, dryer sheets, and other non-mentionable items:-> that somehow work there way in between the inner and outer tubs and get sucked into the drain pump canal.

The other problem I see is a defective or malfunctioned pump impeller. The impeller tends to break from its shaft and rattle around instead of rotating in a smooth fashion - which is required for proper pump operation. What causes this? Well, in the previous paragraph I mentioned the junk that eventually gets sucked into the washer pump canal. Some of this junk makes its way past the pump trap, if it's small enough, and caused enough stress on the impeller to damage and eventually break it.

So, how can we verify if we have a bad pump or we need to clean the pump canal? Easy, we choose step 1, clean the pump canal - from the pump all the way through the rubber drain baffle at the bottom of the washer.

First step, remove the bottom front panel of washer by loosening and removing the three screws located at the very bottom front of panel. Pull out gently then pull down to remove.

Second step, get a large bowl or shallow pan to catch the water from the drain trap. Place the pan under the drain trap to catch the water and remove the washer pump drain trap cover by rotating it counter clockwise. This may take some effort. Work slowly. Removing the trap cover too fast may cause a massive amount of water to flood out and cause damage. Remove it just enough so you can catch the water at a controlled rate.

Once all water has been drained out, remove the trap cover completely and clean all coin and debris from the trap. Disconnect the hose clamp from the rubber baffle hose that connects from the pump to the bottom of tub. Disconnect the large clamp from the hose at the bottom of the tub and remove the drain baffle. Inspect and clean it. Inspect and clean the orifice at the bottom of tub to make sure any socks or underwear hasn't clogged it.

Once we are sure everything is clear, and everything has been cleaned, stick your finger into the front of the trap and feel into the side of the pump where the impeller is located. Make sure there isn't anything stuck in it. Make sure the impeller moves freely. It should have a piston type of feedback feel when rotated. Make sure it is not broken from its shaft. If any damaged is noticed then the pump will need to be replaced.

These completed steps should help you resolve your F2 error code issues. If you are still having issues then professional appliance repair service will be needed. Thanks for reading.

Dishwasher Maintenance Tips

!±8± Dishwasher Maintenance Tips

Dishwasher preventative and maintenance tips that can extend the life of your dishwasher and help prevent unnecessary repairs. Below you will find some of my best recommendations for proper dishwasher operation.

Make sure that the dishwasher's is installed level. This is very important and a reliable and experienced installer should know how to install this properly. For the homeowner however, please pay special attention during installation. A properly leveled dishwasher will prevent the racks from falling forward as you're loading dishes and will also allow proper drainage.

Make sure the drain hose is properly routed to the air-gap. If there is no "air gap" mounted on the sink then it must be routed and mounted to the top of the underside of countertop before routing to the garbage disposal drain port. This will prevent food particles from entering the drain hose which will eventually form a clog.

Add a cup of white vinegar through the dishwasher to remove residue and odors. Do this at least once per month. You can also add a dishwasher detergent additive to achieve the same results.

Always run hot water in the kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher. This will purge the hot water line and allow hot water to enter the dishwasher at first cycle. The water entering the dishwasher should be 140 F to properly clean the dishes and to prevent food buildup and soap scum. Most dishwashers have an interior heater element which is not of high enough wattage to heat cold water to the proper cleaning temperature.

Clean the door gaskets regularly with a soap solution to remove all food debris and hard water deposits. Rinse and dry. This area is especially important for cleaning since a proper seal is important to prevent leaks.

Clean and inspect the spray arm holes, lower and upper. Remove any food particles, plastics, or toothpicks that may have lodged there. Tweezers or needle-nose pliers may help to remove such items.
Make sure you do not overload your dishwasher. If the spray arm jets are obstructed by plates or other dishes then the dishes will not be cleaned properly. You may also get spray directed to the areas near the door seal and cause leakage.

Do not add more than the recommended amount of detergent. Excessive detergent will cause suds which will seep out door cracks and cause leakage. It may also cause unwanted damage to hardwood or vinyl flooring.

Add detergent additive such as LemonShine to remove unwanted hard water buildup and help cleaning. Phosphates are being phased out of all dishwasher detergent so additional cleaning power may be necessary.

Always use the "heated dry" option on the dishwasher. Most major brand dishwashers including Whirlpool, Kenmore, GE, Frigidaire, and Maytag will have this option. Wet dishes and a wet damp area such as the inside of tub, does not allow enough air flow to prevent mildew buildup. Eventually unwanted mildew and mold will build up on the inside of the sump components and also on the inside walls of the tub.
